STANDARD DEVIATION Any expression of individuality involves some aloneness. Due to this fact, many prefer to blend with the crowd and live by collective opinions and values. What’s normal for an individual might not conform to “the norm”. Standard Deviation is a measure of variability used in statistics and probability theory. It shows how much variation exists from the expected value. The images presented are what normally would be thrown in the trash. They were captured with a Lomography camera; a reproduction from a popular discontinued 1960’s analog device. They respect some of the rules of the Lomography Society: rule no. 6: “Don’t Think” and rule no. 10. “Don’t worry about any rules”. The images approach the question of distinguishing the “normal” from the “norm”. BIOGRAPHY At age 18 Carlos Souffront left his home country, the Dominican Republic to study International Communications with an emphasis in Media Production at Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland. He graduated in 2009 with a Studio Art minor as well. In 2011 he completed his MFA in Film Directing at the EICAR School of film. In 2011 he directed his first film The Cathedral, a non-commercial adaptation of the story by Raymond Carver shot on location in Paris. He is assistant producer at company Bellanopolis and broadens his artistic formation at the reputed École Jacques LeCoq. This is the first exhibition of his Lomography work. Toute expression d'une individualité sous-tend un certain degré de solitude. C’est pour cela que beaucoup la craignent et préfèrent se mêler à la foule et mener une vie dictée par les opinions et les valeurs collectives. Mais ce qui peut sembler normal pour un individu n'est pas pour autant conforme à la « norme ». L'écart type (Standard Deviation en anglais), est une mesure des variables employée dans les statistiques et les probabilités. Il mesure la dispersion d'une série de valeurs autour de leur moyenne. Les clichés présentés sont des images a priori bonnes à jeter. Ces photographies ont été prises avec un appareil Lomographique, réactualisation du gadget populaire des années 1960. Elles respectent quelques règles de la Lomography Society, telles que la règle numéro 6 : “Ne pense pas” et la règle numéro 10 : “Moque toi des règles”. Ainsi, par le biais de ces clichés, l'auteur se pose la question de la distinction entre la « norme » et la « normalité ». BIOGRAPHIE À 18 ans, Carlos Souffront quitte son pays natal, La République Dominicaine, pour suivre des études en Communication International et se spécialise en Production des Medias à l’école Franklin College à Lugano, en Suisse. Il y obtient un minor en arts plastiques. En 2011 il obtient son MFA en Réalisation de Cinéma à l’école EICAR, et réalise son premier film "The Cathedral", adaptation non commercial d'une nouvelle de l’écrivain Raymond Carver. Il est actuellement assistant en production dans la société Bellanopolis et continue sa formation artistique à la prestigieuse École Jacques LeCoq. Standard Deviation est la première exposition de ses Lomographies.
